AI Clinical Triage

The use of AI tools to evaluate patient intake data, flag contraindications, and route cases to licensed providers based on clinical criteria.

AI clinical triage sits between patient intake and provider review. It processes structured intake data - medical history, current medications, contraindications, stated goals - and applies rules or model-based logic to determine which patients are eligible for a program, which require additional information, and which should not be routed to a provider. This reduces unnecessary provider time on ineligible cases and accelerates review for straightforward candidates.

For operators, AI triage is a throughput multiplier. A licensed provider's time is your most constrained resource. If providers spend time reviewing cases that should have been caught at intake, your cost per case reviewed rises and turnaround time slows. AI triage filters the queue so providers spend their time on cases that need clinical judgment rather than on routine exclusion criteria.

Karpa's platform includes AI-assisted intake review configured to each program's clinical protocols. Operators define eligibility criteria; the platform applies them automatically before routing cases to the provider queue. Ineligible applicants receive appropriate communications without consuming provider capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI triage replace licensed providers? expand_more
No. AI triage pre-screens and routes cases. A licensed provider makes every prescribing decision. The AI surfaces relevant information and flags issues, but the provider reviews the case and approves or declines the prescription.
What contraindications can AI triage catch? expand_more
AI triage can flag drug interactions, absolute contraindications listed in a program's protocol, incomplete intake responses, and patients whose stated conditions fall outside eligibility criteria. Operators configure the rules; the platform applies them consistently.
How does AI triage affect patient experience? expand_more
For eligible patients, triage reduces wait time by moving their case into the provider queue faster. For ineligible patients, it produces a faster decline response with appropriate communication rather than leaving them waiting for a provider to make a routine exclusion decision.
